DoE pushes LGUs to go for Renewable Energy

The Department of Energy (DoE) is encouraging various local government units (LGUs) to help in promoting the use of Renewable Energy to help triple its consumption in the country in the next thirty years.

In the recently held International Conference on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficientcy at Marco Polo Hotel in Cebu City, DoE Renewable Energy Management Bureau director, Mario Marasigan made an appeal to continue the development of other RE sources to be able to fully realized the national governement’s goal of maximizing the use of RE in the country.

He further stated that more wind generation could be done in the North while solar could be developed in the south.

Marasigan noted that the Philippines currently uses 5,500 megawatts of electricity from differenet RE sources and that the DoE is confident that they can triple it in the next three decades, particularly if the LGUs will support this endeavor.

Present in the same event, DoE Visayas Director Antonio Labios also expressed their plans to strengthen their information dissemination and education campaign regarding RE, specifically in rural areas.

Labios said that these remote areas should be the primary target mainly because these are where the renewable energy sources are most likely to be found.
